Outline
Computer and telecommunication networks can be categorized into several aspects: IP (Internet Protocol), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), WSN (Wireless Sensor Network), etc. This course systematically considers the issues of routing algorithms, traffic control and analysis, and coverage problems encountered in communication networks, especially in the research field of WSN technologies. This course also discusses how algorithms, protocols, and deployments can be used in the WSN. The most importantly, this course discusses how routing and other functions are accomplished at the level of networks, and how these algorithms impact the WSN to have efficient routing. In addition, the students enrolled this course will learn how to use the simulation tools to buildup these networks on computers, such as NS2 and MATLAB. Also, students are required to impletment their ideas, and to evaluate their performances. In this course, we provide the Super Nodes of NTU or Octopus II of NTHU with basic communication ability and I/O ports. Thus, students can utilize them to implement these algorithms in practice except for the simulation on computers. Generally, students who enroll this course will learn:

1. The evolution of computer networks
2. The routing algorithms and theories used in IP, ATM, PSTN, and WSN
3. The impact of routing algorithms in WSN
4. Deployment of routing protocols in WSN
5. Traffic engineering in routing of data packets in WSN
6. Alternative topology and coverage optimization in WSN
7. Operational experiences learned from implementations

Grade Assessment: 1. homework: 40%, 2. midterm exam and term project: 60%
